Manchester United could be set to go toe-to-toe with Real Madrid as the pair chase a deal for Athletic Bilbao defender Aymeric Laporte – despite the club demanding a £32m fee.
United boss Louis van Gaal is on the hunt for a new defender before the January transfer window closes next Monday.
And according to the latest reports in the Mirror, Laporte is among the Dutchman’s top targets.

But Bilbao know they are in a strong position, especially with interest also mounting from Real Madrid, and are determined to hold out for the full £32m release clause, as written into the 20-year-old’s contract.
Laporte is reportedly keen to move to Old Trafford should the clause be triggered, but United may have to move fast if they are to beat Carlo Ancelotti’s side to a deal.
