Wayne Rooney is keen to start in Manchester United’s opening tour game against LA Galaxy in Pasadena in the early hours of Thursday morning, despite having joined up with the club only on Friday after a post-World Cup break. The 28-year-old striker had a light session before the club flew to America on Friday afternoon, so has had only a few days of training to regain fitness while in LA.

However, Ryan Giggs, Louis van Gaal’s assistant, said: “Wayne really wants to start. Everyone will be involved in the first game. Wayne looks good. Actually all of the World Cup lads have come back looking really sharp.

“The World Cup boys are a bit behind in terms of their fitness, with the other lads who have been back 10 days or so, but no, Wayne looks good along with the rest of the lads.”

If Rooney does start he may captain the side, though Van Gaal is yet to decide who will be his permanent leader. “It always matters who the captain is,” Giggs said. “It’s a tremendous honour. Not many people get to captain Manchester United.

“It’s one of the things we discussed first when I met Louis [before becoming the No2].”

But the manager is yet to choose who may be captain, with Robin van Persie the other favourite and Giggs suggesting other players could thrive on the responsibility.

“The decision hasn’t been made yet. Louis is still getting to know the players,” he said. “The likes of Phil Jones, Chris Smalling, and Jonny Evans – maybe a player like that will thrive on it.”
