It may have been a rough few weeks for the reigning world No. 1 Novak Djokovic, but his consistency has shown that no matter the results he achieves in the weeks leading up to the four Grand Slam events, he always seems to rise to his best form during the Major championship fortnights. He will look to prove that in his opening round contest against Diego Schwartzman, whom he has never encountered on the professional tour.
Following his Wimbledon title win over Roger Federer in a thrilling five-set battle, Djokovic had his momentum snatched from him with poor showings in the US Open Series tournaments in Toronto and Cincinnati.
Djokovic lost to eventual champion Jo-Wilfried Tsonga in Toronto and to Tommy Robredo in Cincinnati, both in the third round. While he does not plan on underestimating any of his opponents, he is inspired to return to form next week in Flushing Meadows.
“I don’t underestimate any tournament. I, of course, wanted to do well, but I couldn’t. I was aware of the fact that I need to recharge, regroup and get myself on the right path for the US Open. It’s the last Grand Slam of the season. I’ve been spending a lot of hours on the court and trying to get my game to where I want it to be.”
Although he is yet to play a hard court match this summer, Argentina’s Diego Sebastian Schwartzman is coming off a clay court title win on the Challenger circuit. His last win on the ATP World Tour came against German youngster Alexander Zverev.
This marks the first time these two competitors will meet on the professional tour. Djokovic will undoubtedly be a monumental favourite against Schwartzman and rightfully so; he is far more experienced at this sort of event and will likely prove that to be the case when he steps out onto Arthur Ashe Stadium.
