Manchester United star to be named footballer of the year

According to reports in the Portuguese media Manchester United star Nani is to be named the Sporting Lisbon player of the year. The Portugal international is currently on season long loan with his former club and has been in impressive form during the campaign so far.

Record have revealed today that Nani will receive the accolade on the 18th December at the Sporting Lisbon award ceremony. Despite the winger only joining the Portuguese side in the summer he has done enough to get himself the player of the year award for 2014. The Manchester United star has beaten the likes of young midfielder William Carvalho who himself has been in good form during this calendar year. source: ning.com

Carvalho only arrived on the scene at the start of last season but his performances earned him a call up to the Portugal national team and he was part of their squad during this summer’s World Cup in Brazil. Many top sides around Europe have been monitoring his progress including Manchester United and a move looks likely in the near future. However, his performances have tailed off this season which has enabled Nani to grab the award.

Nani returned to Portugal in the summer as part of the Marcos Rojo deal. Since his arrival he has been the stand out player for his team and also in the Portuguese league. He has scored some important goals in the last few months and especially in the Champions League.

It has led to rumours he could return to Old Trafford in the New Year but he is likely to see out the season with Sporting Lisbon. When he does return to Manchester in the summer Louis van Gaal may give the player another chance to make an impact at the club, if not then Nani's price will have risen thanks to the spell back at Sporting.
